The documentation of Barnes Hospital that survives is largely a collection of correspondence and various other papers relating to the establishment and early years of the hospital administration. The record group includes correspondence, documents, reports, financial records, lists of equipment, minutes of meetings, publications and statistical data. Barnes Hospital was founded on an endowment established by Robert A. Barnes, a St. Louis wholesale grocer, who died in 1892. The original buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1914. In 1911, a contract was made between the hospital trustees and Washington University School of Medicine affiliating the two institutions, whereby the faculty of the school serves as the medical staff of the hospital.
